Meet the surgeon

Mr. Jason Fleming graduated in Medicine and Surgery from Imperial College London in 2005 and is on the Specialist Register for Otolaryngology (ENT) since 2019.

He is fully registered with the General Medical Council (6129837), a member of ENT UK, British Association of Head and Neck Oncologists (BAHNO), British Association of Endocrine & Thyroid Surgeons (BAETS), American Head and Neck Society (AHNS) and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, having won the national gold medal for his UK intercollegiate board exams in 2017.

An international training pathway

Mr. Fleming undertook higher specialist training in Otolaryngology, Head and neck surgery and sub specialised in Head & Neck Surgery, with a clinical practice and research portfolio heavily centred on surgical oncology.

He completed his surgical Registrar training in London, UK, including specialist attachments in head and neck surgery at St George’s Hospital as well as gaining paediatric head and neck experience at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Following successful defence of his PhD in Cancer Biology at the University of Southampton, he specialised in head and neck cancer surgery during the latter years of his clinical training, culminating in a Training Interface Group (TIG) Fellowship at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, learning advanced oncology techniques from leaders in the field of ENT and Oral and Maxillofacial surgery.

Mr. Fleming was then the first UK trainee to secure a prestigious and unique North American Fellowship at one of the world’s busiest head and neck units at University of Alabama-Birmingham, during which he further honed his skills in both ablative and reconstructive surgery. He also received dedicated training there in Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS) under the tutelage of Dr. William Carroll, one of the original pioneering surgeons utilising this technology, and was able to learn and develop his craft on three different surgical platforms (Intuitive Da Vinci Si, Xi and SP). On returning to the UK, he has been able to bring these skills back to his practice in Liverpool and he is now an established national expert in transoral surgery and the first head and neck surgeon selected in Europe to be accredited on the new CE marked DaVinci Single Port robotic system. This story was featured on ITV Granada News in April 2024.

He has published over 50 peer-reviewed publications, 6 published/in-press chapters in internationally recognised textbooks and achieved over £2.3M in research grant income. He regularly engages with the public through his work with the regional head and neck patient and carer support group, and the website for the Liverpool head and neck unit, for which he secured funded and co-developed, is becoming a global resource for both patients and professionals (livheadandneck.co.uk).
