Covering all aspects of transoral robotic surgery, this Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh Webinar gave me the opportunity to discuss our early experience with the Da Vinci SP platform in Liverpool. It was also great to hear about the latest practice and innovations from across the globe, especially from India through the College’s partnership with ARIS (Association of Robotic & Innovative Surgeons) for this series of talks.

It was a pleasure to attend the annual meeting of the European and International Network of Sinonasal Cancer Research (EUSICA) and brain tumour research, which took place at this year’s Oncology Professional Care event in the London ExCel Centre. As well as having the chance to hear from international leaders in the care of sinonasal malignancy, a rare but devastating type of cancer, it was an honour to be able to present our PROTIS trial protocol and plans. Co-led by Professor David Thomson from The Christie (Manchester), we are aiming to investigate whether proton beam therapy results in improved outcomes and reduced side effects compared to the current standard of care radiotherapy. We are hoping to open this CRUK/Taylor Family Foundation funded trial in the UK in the coming months.

On 22nd April 2024, patients in Cheshire and Merseyside became the first in Europe to be treated with transoral surgery for oropharynx (throat) cancers with a next generation robot - the Da Vinci Single Port (SP) platform. Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (LUHFT) and the Liverpool Head and Neck Centre pioneered this treatment in Europe, being the first public hospital to obtain the technology thanks to the generous donation of £1 million from the Marina Dalglish Appeal (MDA). The MDA was set up by the Dalglish family in 2005 to support other cancer patients after Marina Dalglish was successfully treated for breast cancer at Aintree in 2003. The donation was match funded by the Trust. Please get in touch if you would like more information or if you are unsure if you might benefit from this technology. Jason Fleming is the first head and neck surgeon in Europe to be accredited on the system following his previous use of the system during his International Fellowship at UAB-Birmingham, Alabama, USA.
